Shanklin Beach - The long sandy beach at Shanklin is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Isle of Wight. The fine light sand is ideal for beach games and relaxing under the sun. Swimming and playing in the surf are popular activities at Shanklin Beach but there are also some organised events and activities for children and families. Punch and Judy can be found on Shanklin Beach in the summer months.
Shanklin Old Town - At the south end of Shanklin is Shanklin Old town with the thatched shops and public house. Here you will also find a range of traditional little shops selling local produce, old fashioned sweets and seaside gifts.
Shanklin Gardens - At the south end of Shanklin, between Shanklin Old Town and the beach is Shanklin Gardens which are a lovely peaceful place to take a short walk. You can walk from the centre of town up to a cliff top view (where there is a tea garden) and look down over Shanklin Beach. You are able to join the Isle of Wight Coastal Path from here.
Shanklin Cycle Route - There is a short bike ride from Shanklin which follows part of the Isle of Wight cycle network. The route is called Route 11 and is described here - Isle of Wight Cycle Route 11 - for more cycle routes visit our Isle of Wight cycling page.
Shanklin to Newport by Bike - If you are looking for a fairly flat bike ride with attractive rural scenery and with plenty of options to stop along the way and enjoy lunch at a pub or a picnic on a bench you might want to follow the cycle track from Shanklin to Newport (or as far along it as you wish to go). The cycle track is signposted from Shanklin station and is well marked all the way. - for more cycle routes visit our Isle of Wight cycling page.
Shanklin Coastal Path - The coastal path from Shanklin is a beautiful part of the route which runs right around the Isle of Wight. To the South it is possible to walk to Luccombe where you can visit Devils Chimney and have tea at the tea shop, then on to Bonchurch with its 11th Century church and pretty village pond before getting to Ventnor where there is a beach and the Ventnor Botanical Gardens.
Shanklin to Ryde on the Train - You can travel to Ryde by the most punctual train in Britain. This day trip is a chance to visit the beach at Ryde or you may wish to incorporate it into a walk. One walk would be to take the train to Ryde and then follow the coastal path back towards Shanklin. You don"t have to go all the way back (although it is achievable in a day) but rather visit the small seaside town of Seaview which is only 45mins to an hour from Ryde before returning to Ryde to take the train back to Shanklin.
