Self-catering holiday accommodation in Carisbrooke

The pretty village of Carisbrooke lies on the south western outskirts of Newport and is home to one of the most famous historical places of interest on the island, the enchanting Carisbrooke Castle. Originally a Roman fort, it was built soon after William the Conqueror arrived in England and is now run by English Heritage. It is also home to the medieval parish Church of St. Mary’s with its striking tower, which began life as part of a Benedictine priory, established by French monks in the 12th century.

The village has several shops and a couple of pubs and restaurants, and has good transport links to popular towns such as Ventnor, Yarmouth and Freshwater. Carisbrooke is only ten miles from the north-west coast, with its beautiful beaches and the Newtown National Nature Reserve, and is a twenty-minute drive away from the sailing town of Cowes in the north.

A series of events is held at Cowes throughout the year, in particular the famous regatta every August which attracts thousands of visitors from across the globe, Cowes Week. There is a great selection of walks and cycle routes across the island’s beautiful countryside and it is possible to walk right out to the eastern coast of Bembridge as well as Freshwater to the west.
