Self-catering holiday accommodation in Cowes
Known as the sailing town of the Isle of Wight, Cowes is a popular destination for sailors from both near and far. While they have events all year, the town really comes alive during Cowes Week in August, when hoards of visitors descend on the town for the famous regatta. There is a sailing academy in Cowes but you may prefer to sit back and watch the racing instead which takes place close to the shore.
There are lots of shops selling maritime goods, such as sailing clothes and accessories but there are also enough boutique shops, cafes and restaurants to keep those without sea legs happy. There is a long seafront promenade heading west towards the quaint village of Gurnard, a pretty area with a tidal beach and a great coastal ambience – an ideal spot to relax and watch the boats sail by.
The former summer residence of Queen Victoria, Osborne House is over the river and about one mile outside East Cowes; now managed by English Heritage, its house and gardens are now open to the public and make a great day out.
And just two miles to the west of Cowes you'll find the charming village of Gurnard, with its beautiful beach and family friendly feel.
