The small bay at Steephill Cove has been described as one of the Isle of Wight’s hidden treasures due to its exceptionally pretty beach, the abundance of crabs and lobsters waiting to be caught, and its secluded location.
Entry to the beach is via pathways only, yet its reduced accessibility adds to its air of mystery. The two routes are via the coast path through Ventnor or down through the Ventnor Botanical Gardens.

Once at the bay you can relax on the sand and shingle beach, swim in the clear water and enjoy lunch at one of the two eateries, The Boathouse Seafood Restaurant, and the Cove Coffee Shop, with views of the sea. The best time to visit Steephill Cove is at the low tide. At high tide the water comes right up to the sea wall. The bay is a natural sun trap and is often protected from much of the sea breeze by the cliffs at either end of the beach.
Very close by is the Ventnor Botanical Gardens to visit with rare plants collected from around the world which thrive on the sheltered southern side the island. Ventnor Beach and the undercliff is also about a mile away along the signposted coastal path.
Facilities at Steephill Cove include public toilets, deck chair hire, and a slipway. Dogs are welcome on leads, and can run off the lead after 6pm.
