Property code: 78099

Standing at the foot of Tennyson Down, this distinctive apartment’s sat within the cliffs of Freshwater Bay, benefiting views over the bay to the east and the English Channel to the south and west.

Located at the foot of Tennyson Down, this unique apartment sits in the moat of one of the island’s most photographed and painted landmarks: Fort Redoubt. This Palmerston fort was constructed back in 1856 in response to the threat of possible invasion by Napoleon. The caponiers were originally built as barrack accommodation for 24 soldiers, but today they are welcoming holiday homes. Now sleeping six people over three bedrooms and welcoming two four-legged friends, this quirky apartment is the perfect accommodation option for a family or small group of friends who appreciate a sense of history and incredible ocean views.

You can’t help but appreciate the history of Fort Redoubt as you cross the bridge over the moat to arrive at the complex of properties where you’ll find your holiday home. Access to the caponiers is via a staircase through an iron gate from the fort’s central parade square. Step inside and you’ll find yourself in a spacious open-plan living room/kitchen/diner. Cook up a feast for your loved ones in the well-equipped kitchen and serve up dinner in the dining area. There’s plenty of room for everyone around the table. After dinner, relax in front of the TV and warming gas stove or plan the next day with your loved ones. At the end of the day there are three lovely bedrooms to choose from. There is allocated parking for two cars in the forts central parade square. A table and chairs are provided to sit out and enjoy the shared grounds in the moat which is easily accessed from this apartment and a BBQ is also provided.

You’ll find a good selection of water sports at Freshwater Bay (0.5 miles), which is said to be one of the best beaches on the island. Further afield, spend a day at The Needles (3 miles), where a row of three stacks of chalk rise up out of the sea. Take in the views from a chairlift ride, learn about glass blowing at Alum Bay Glass, or try your luck at Jurassic Adventure Golf.

This apartment is very comfortable and so so quiet for a small family. Great walks nearby and fabulous country pubs with super food. Easy parking and Simon the local neighbour was very welcoming. We had a superb relaxing break.

A lovely restored capioner, everything you could need is supplied however it is the only self catering accommodation I have rented that did not supply a welcome basket. I knew there were stairs to the flat however did not realise it was 19 & then another 2 sets of 8 & 7 to get to the lower caponier. This meant our elderly relatives could not come tRead moreo visit us. Also a hard slog to carry luggage & groceries. Excellent location for walking the downs, watching the bud & the bay. Hide

Lovely comfortable base for our holiday and the location is perfect for long walks. Coming back to the fire and sofa meant we felt at home straight away. Good beds and all equipment was available. Thoroughly relaxing, we will return later in the year.

This is a stunning peaceful location, with walks across the downs and to the beach. We had walked past the fort before and were intrigued to stay there. Very unusual property, and nicely fitted out with most things you needed. Nice to find a "travelling pub" and pizza van parked in the bay. We had a bbq in the moat, which was lovely. Lots of steep Read moresteps in and out of the property, and a bumpy track up to the parking spaces. Hide

The property is in a wonderful location, where you can walk out onto the Downs. We had a fabulous week exploring the area. It was fun staying in the fort. The main living area is beautifully appointed and a great space for the family to be together. The main bedroom/ensuite was a slight disappointment although the other 2 bedrooms and bathroom wereRead more well appointed. It's definitely cool temperature-wise as you're effectively underground so make sure to take an extra hoodie! Hide

We had a lovely week's stay in the Lower Caponier. The renovation of this once derelict building has been creatively and sympathetically carried out, with many original features remaining. The accommodation is very comfortable and tastefully furnished. The shower in the en-suite wet room is especially good! Fort Redoubt Freshwater Bay. What can I say? Absolutely stunning location. Anyone who has a dog or just loves walking would struggle to find a better place to stay.
