Property code: OC-IC154

This Grade II listed thatched cottage dates back more than three hundred years and has been owned by the same family for generations. It is a character cottage which has retained many original features. It occupies an attractive central position in the coastal resort of St Helens, overlooking the village green where cricket is sometimes played. St. Helens carnival, sports and fair is also centred round the green each August Bank Holiday weekend. The Poplars is a ten minutes walk from a sandy beach where visitors can enjoy swimming and paddling. St Helens is famous for the 12th Century church tower which adorns the shoreline. Nearby is a large National Trust area which commands some of the loveliest views on the Island. The neighbouring seaside village of Bembridge can be reached by taking an interesting 30-minute stroll from the cottage around the harbour. The larger seaside towns of Ryde and Sandown are only a short drive away.

This is a self-contained property comprising the larger part of a detached stone cottage. (The owners use the smaller adjoining part of The Poplars as a retreat and when visiting they have access through the garden to the shed and top gate). All the main rooms are south facing and enjoy views across the village green to the downs beyond. The cottage has been furnished with care in a traditional style. Upstairs, there are two pretty bedrooms - one double and one twin room (travel cot and high chair available). It has a bathroom with a bath and an electric shower over on the ground floor.

There is a comfortable sitting room for relaxing with a sofa, two arm chairs, log effect electric fire, a flat screen television with Freeview and DVD player; a kitchen with fitted units and a pleasant dining area by the window. An electric cooker, microwave, refrigerator, freezer and washing machine are provided. Night storage heaters keep the cottage warm during the colder months and convector heaters are available for guests to use in the summer. Heating and electricity are at no extra charge.

There is a lovely fenced garden both at the front and rear of the cottage, and an attractive patio with garden furniture so that meals can be enjoyed in the sunshine. (Please be aware that barbecues are not permitted in the garden because of the thatched roof). Cars can be parked in the road opposite the cottage when space permits. The car park, general stores, public house, two good restaurants, telephone and public transport are within two to three minutes walk.

  • 2 bedrooms - 1 double, 1 twin
  • 1 bathroom – with shower over the bath and WC
  • Electric oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, washing machine and Nespresso coffee machine
  • Smart TV in the lounge
  • Garden with outside seating
  • Local amenities with easy driving distance
  • 2 small/medium-sized dogs welcome downstairs
  • Please note that BBQs are prohibited due to the thatched roof
  • The owners use the smaller adjoining part of The Poplars as a retreat and when visiting they have access through the garden to the shed and top gate
  • Arrival: 15:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00
  • 2 dogs allowed. Additional charges may apply

Beautiful thatched cottage. Great location. Lots of lovely local walks. The front and back garden were secure for our dog. Cottage was very cozy and had everything we needed. Beware of the low door ways. My hubby hit his head THREE times!

Pretty, quaint, picture perfect cottage, walking distance from the beach and with a well maintained garden where on sunny days you can sit and enjoy it the peacefulness. It can be cold in the colder months. Parking can be a challenge.

Fantastic all round from the picture postcard looks to the gardens and location. Walks straight from the door to the local beaches and inland. Premier shop and pub within 100 meters a bonus. The pub has a busy evening entertainment which is great. No noise can be heard in the cottage from the road or patrons of the pub in the evenings. Gardens fronRead moret and back ideal for relaxing, both enclosed so great for dog owners with a garden hose. Yes we would stay here again. Hide

The cottage was very comfortable, well equipped, however, chilly late afternoon/evening, appreciated the use of convector heaters and the log effect electric fire. Note there is a low bulkhead coming down the stairs beware of banging heads and a must to duck when going through the back door to/from the garden. Beautiful, secure garden. Very well placed thatched cottage in a vibrant village facing the cricket green, good local parking and with a pub a few doors away. Ideal for exploring Bembridge Harbour and nearby coastline.
