  • Situated on the grounds of a country house whose former guests include Prince Phillip
Property code: IC099

Puckaster Cottage is situated in the grounds of Puckaster House and surrounded by six acres of garden, with lawns going down towards the sea. Prince Phillip stayed at Puckaster House on several occasions when he was learning to sail. Princess Elizabeth is also reputed to have visited. The house is approached by a long driveway and is within the village of Niton Undercliff on the south coast of the Island. It is a haven for wildlife with rabbits, badgers, foxes, pheasants and a variety of birds. The sandy beach of Ventnor is within a 15 to 20-minute drive and there is easy access to the smaller beaches and coves on the south west coast. This is also a wonderful walking area with easy access to the coastal path which extends to The Needles on the western tip of the Isle of Wight.

Puckaster Cottage is on one side of an attractive courtyard in which stand the original coach houses for the main house. It is a detached property, separated from the main house and wing by a small courtyard. The cottage is built of Island stone and dates back to the 1800s. It provides spacious accommodation for six people and has been decorated and furnished with care. Many original features have been retained including the flagstone floor in the hall. There is a large, comfortably furnished sitting room with windows overlooking the courtyard. A television with Freeview and DVD player is provided.

There are three charming bedrooms; (travel cot and high chair are available); a bathroom with shower, and a separate lavatory. The spacious kitchen has a central dining area, fitted units and a tiled floor. There is an AGA, only available for use in colder winter months, as well as an electric cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. Storage heaters keep the cottage warm. Heating and electricity are free of charge. We regret it is not possible to use the wood burning stove.

There is a terrace at the rear of the cottage and from here there are views across the courtyard to the gardens and sea. (This terrace is accessed from the upper level of the cottage via the main bedroom). Visitors can also follow a path through the beautiful larger gardens of the main house to secluded areas of garden and a place where children can play games. (Please be aware that there are two ponds in the gardens, so children need to be closely supervised). One car can be parked in the garage and a second car in the adjoining courtyard. The cove of Castle Haven is only a 15-minute walk away, as is St Catherine's lighthouse. The Buddle Inn is within a five-minute walk, and within a 15-minute walk there are general stores, a post office, hardware shop, chemist, library and a doctors, plus a second public house for meals.

A nice little cottage with good parking and an ideal location to explore the island. The kitchen could do with updating but is functional. If you are not great with steps this might not be the property for you.

The cottage was lovely and spacious but the star of this stay was the wonderful grounds and location. Thank you for having us.

The cottage was general exactly as we expected for a property of that age.and it was a lovely place to stay in. There were tradesmen in every day we were there carrying out work in the main house and on the odd days we stayed in the constant saws and tool noise was a little disappointing but we also understand that these things need to be done and Read morethe tradesmen only carried the work out during respectful hours. No noise before 9am and none after 5pm. Hide

The location is quiet and peaceful yet there are two pubs, a seaside restaurant and a grocers within walking distance. The grounds are a special feature of this property. Our grandchildren loved playing in and exploring the extensive gardens. The owner was friendly and helpful.

Not suitable for children as could fall through broken walls and half finished building to ground 20 feet below. Beware uneven steps. Kitchen very poorly equipped. Beds excellent, location great and gardens are superb. An idiosyncratic property with interesting heritage bur really does need some updating. Owner very jolly and pleasant lady.

We had a lovely stay here, beautiful house and grounds. Unfortunately upon arrival the third bedroom wasnt ready, there were 5 of us and the house was only made up for 2. We contacted the owner who unlocked the bedroom for us but the beds were not made up. We also paid extra for towels which were not supplied. The owner did rectify this for us.

Lovely location, very quiet and secluded. A good base for exploring the IOW. It would very much benefit from a second W.C especially if it were at full capacity (sleeps 6). The main bedroom would also benefit from a king size bed rather than the small double it currently has as this is a lovely spacious room and the kitchen suffers from damp, whichRead more is such a shame as the cottage is in a great location and has a wonderful pub within walking distance which we would highly recommend. Excellent week at Puckaster Cottage, superb location that is secluded, quiet and relaxing. Walk around gardens was beautiful and relaxing. Cottage was well equipped and comfortable with the exception of kitchen which was damp and cold during a very warm and sunny week.
