This attractive East Isle of Wight cycle loop runs in a large and mostly flat circle along attractive cycle paths and bridal ways with a minimum of road cycling. The ground is mostly track but there are a couple of fields along the way.
The ride can be started from almost anywhere along the route but the most convenient start points are Merstone Station, Godshill, Wroxall, or Newchurch. At Merstone Station and Godshill there is free parking in the car parks. It is also possible to join our route by following the cycle track from Sandown.
We will start this ride at Godshill where there is a great public house where we can eat or stop for a drink when we return. Jump to Cycle Ride Detailed Directions »
Godshill is our start point. You can buy supplies at the various local shops in the village or have breakfast at one of the cafes in the village. The car park is ample and was free the last time we visited.
1. Head out of Godshill along the main road towards Shanklin and turn left onto a track marked "Sunshine trail" after less than 300 meters. Follow the track past the farm and over open fields. Continue to follow the track as it snakes first left and then right and joins a paved track. After less then 300 meters of paved road turn right off the road and onto a narrow cycle route just before the old railway bridge and follow this down onto the main cycle route which was once a railway line.
The Merstone Station Start Point joins here. If you are starting from Merstone Station you follow the National Cycle Route from the car park in the direction of Sandown till you reach this railway bridge.
2. Go under the railway bridge in the direction of Sandown (which is signposted at this junction) and continue to follow the cycle path for a number of miles across a main road with traffic lights, over the next road in Newchurch, over the following road in Alverstone till you reach a forth road.
There is an optional short cut up the road from Alverstone by going up the hill and rejoining the route at the top of Burnt House Ln
3. Turn right onto this road and then right again after 100 meters onto the bridal way. Follow the bridal way through the woods and around a field till you reach Burnt House Ln which you will turn right onto and follow as far as the paved road.
4. Turn right onto the road and follow it for 300 meters till you see woodland. Just before the woods bear left onto a track going to the left of the woodland area and slightly down hill. Follow the lane past several drive ways and scattered houses and on till you climb a small hill at the top of which there is a blue and white cottage.
5. Continue past the cottage and keep left onto a smaller bridal way. Follow this down towards the grass airstrip and join the road. Follow the road across the end of the airstrip towards the main Newport to Sandown road.
6. Turn left onto the road in the direction of Sandown but take the first track into the woods on the right just before the small roundabout. It is hard to spot as the sign is obscured or removed. Follow the track through a gate and on into the woods straight ahead. The track continues straight over a small cross roads (cross tracks) and on towards a holiday camp.
7. Emerge into the holiday camp and follow the holiday camp road up a hill to the main buildings and the swimming pool. Just past the swimming pool bear right onto another road which leads towards a woodland track. Here you will finally see a signpost in the hedge. Follow the track till there is a clearing and you can see a parallel track running along side. Make you way over to this new track and continue along it in the same direction till you reach the end of the cycle path on the edge of Wroxall. Dismount from the bike and follow the foot path into Wroxall where you will emerge next to a bridge and you will see the main road on your right.
8. Turn right onto the main road in Wroxall and cycle down the hill for 250meters before tuning left onto Appuldurcombe Rd. Follow the road and bear right towards Appuldurcombe House and go through the stone gate pillars of the house before immediately turning right onto the bridal way marked as the Worsley Trail. Follow the Worsley Trail across the fields to the large stone gate called Freemantle Gate. Follow the trail through the Freemantle Gate and down the track on the other side. Go through a gate and onto a paved track down to the main road.
9. Turn Left on the main road and follow it back to Godshill.
