This picturesque Grade II listed cottage dates back to 1676 and is attractively situated at the end of a quiet lane with a lovely ford and footpath leading to the nearby medieval castle of Carisbrooke. Located in the oldest part of Carisbrooke village which is a conservation area lying within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The castle is only 5 minutes walk away and can be glimpsed from the garden and main bedrooms. This is a wonderful walking area as within 5 minutes walk of the cottage visitors can join the famous Tennyson Trail which follows the downs westerly towards The Needles. Introduction

Virginia Cottage is a Grade II listed thatched holiday cottage located in a quiet lane with local shop, post office, bus stops and pub/restaurants within three minutes walk. The main town of Newport is within twenty minutes walk. The cottage has three floors. The ground floor has toilet and shower facilities, the main bathroom is on the first floor.

Although modern comforts and appliances are provided throughout, it should be noted that parts of the cottage date back to 1676 and hence sloping floors, narrow stairs and old fixtures and fittings must be preserved for Listed Building purposes. However, these features also give the cottage a unique charm and character

Pre-Arrival

  • All guests are provided with written directions to the house
  • The cottage does not have a landline phone
  • Public transport is available from the bus stop on the high street with services running to most parts of the island. The time-table for the services is in the cottage
  • The village centre of Carisbrooke is a three minute walk away with a General Store and Post Office as well as two Public Houses serving food, and an Italian restaurant
  • Delivery of provisions can be obtained from Sainsbury in Newport
  • Taxi details are in the cottage information guide
  • This Access Statement is available in the 'Guest Information' file in the cottage

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

  • The pedestrian entrance to the property is off Castle Street. There is also a gravel drive off Castle Street leading to the garage and hard standing area
  • There is car parking for one large or two small cars on the driveway directly in front of the garage. The garage is not available for visitor use
  • Pedestrian access and parking is on level ground with direct access to the flat pathways leading to the cottage
  • The driveway is concrete, the pathways are old paving and uneven in places
  • There is automatic lighting near the driveway and pathways to the cottage

Main Entrance, Reception

  • The main entrance to the cottage used when you arrive is via the covered porch. The key to the front door is retained in the key guard in the porch. The code to the key guard is issued before arrival
  • There is one other entrance to the cottage at the front of the building. Both entrances have one low step
  • The 'Guest Information' file is in the kitchen and has all details about the cottage within it.

Public Areas - Hall, Stairs, Landing, Corridors etc

  • There are no lifts in the property
  • There are 3 floors
  • There is a WC and shower on the ground floor with a wash hand basin
  • The flooring in the kitchen is stone
  • The flooring in the living room is wooden block floor with a polypropylene rug
  • The flooring in the dining room is wooden block floor with a polypropylene rug
  • The rest of the flooring on the ground floor is ceramic tiling

Public Areas - Sitting room, lounges, lobbies etc

  • The living room is furnished with two large sofas, one three seater and one four seater
  • There is a TV (with FreeView recorder),DVD and VHS, with remote controls. There is a Stereo system with radio and CD player
  • There is one low step from the dining room up to the utility room

Bedrooms & Sleeping Areas

  • There are no bedrooms on the ground floor
  • There are two double bedrooms on the first floor, a further large twin bedroom and a single bedroom on the top floor. All bedrooms are carpeted.
  • All bedding is cotton with non feather pillows and duvets
  • Bedroom 1 has a King Size four poster bed
  • Bedroom 2 has a standard double bed
  • Bedrooms 3 and 4 have single beds

Bathroom with Shower & WC

  • The main bathroom facilities are on the first floor
  • There is a walk-in shower on the ground floor with basin and WC
  • The main bathroom has a bath with hand shower, overhead shower and screen, plus basin and WC

Self-Catering Kitchen

  • The kitchen is on the ground floor and is all one level
  • The taps are monoblock screw on/off
  • The worktop is at standard height
  • Crockery is provided in the wall cupboards, outdoor crockery is provided in the cupboards beneath the work surface. Glasses etc. are in the wall cupboards. Pans and cooking pots/dishes are in the cupboards beneath the work surface
  • The electric hob is set into the worktop, the electric double oven can be accessed from the front (The gas AGA is disconnected and is not to be used by visitors)
  • The dish washer is under the work surface next to the sink.
  • The kitchen is lit by a single overhead light plus recessed spotlights. The flooring is stone.

Laundry

  • There is a front loading washer/dryer available in the utility room. A rotary washing line is also available near the patio area.

Grounds and Gardens

  • The garden is all located at the front of the cottage and is flat, there is also a patio area with picnic table at the front of the cottage
  • Garden furniture and BBQ are available for guests to use There is plenty of seating in the form of benches / chairs and sun loungers.

Additional Information

  • No smoking is allowed in the cottage. The use of candles, matches or lighters is also not allowed due to the risk of fire
  • No pets or animals are allowed in the cottage, and no provision is made for them
  • There is a fire extinguisher and fire blanket in the kitchen. Additional fire extinguishers are provided in the entrance lobby, utility room, first floor landing and second floor.
  • Six smoke alarms are located around the cottage and a Fire Prevention Handbook is provided with the Visitor Information
  • A fire escape is located in the second floor twin bedroom

March 2017 Virginia Cottage is an impressive Grade II listed property which is presented and maintained to a superior standard. The Four Star Self-catering rating has been comfortably retained as the overall score continues to be placed within the higher Five Star level as do the majority of the other areas; which ensures the retention of the Gold Award. The property was pristinely presented throughout; great care has been taken in the final detailing and attention to all the high and low areas. All surfaces and fittings were dust settlement free. Carpeted flooring thoroughly vacuumed with the hard wearing flooring being maintained to a very high standard of cleanliness. A delightful Grade II listed thatched cottage, full of character and charm. Positive impressions are gained upon arrival from the quality and presentation of the thatched roof and exposed stone detailing, along with the generous sized mature gardens and peaceful location. Located in the oldest part of Carisbrooke village which is a conservation area lying within An area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a short walk to Carrisbrooke Castle and all the local attractions and amenities. Exacting cleanliness standards continue to be implemented. A smart blocked paved car parking area now in place.

Virginia Cottage is a non smoking cottage. WiFi Internet is provided free of charge at Virginia Cottage. Virginia Cottage is available for weekly self catering holiday bookings from Saturday to Saturday. The normal arrival time at this holiday cottage is 16:00 and the normal departure time is 11:00. Short break weekend and midweek self catering holidays are available from and 27th October 2018 to 15th November 2018.

Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight local attractions for a self catering holiday at Virginia Cottage

The villages of Carisbrooke is located at the heart of the Isle of Wight and is best know for the remains of Carisbrooke Castle which sits on the hill above the village. A small shop and a post office can be found in the village as well as a couple of public houses. A footpath runs from just outside the village all the way to Alum Bay in the far West of the Island.

Walking Trails around Carisbrooke

Tennyson Trail - The Tennyson Trail starts on the edge of Carisbrooke and runs all the way along the Downs to Freshwater Bay and then up to The Needles and Alum Bay. This spectacular trail is a substantial walk but there is a bus back to Carisbrooke from Freshwater and Alum Bay. Tennyson Trail

The centre of the Isle of Wight is best known for its historic monuments and beautiful countryside. The hills in this area are great for walking and exploring and paths fan out across the Isle of Wight. Carisbrooke, Bowcombe and Blackwater are found to the South and West of Newport. These small villages and Hamlets have unique access to all areas of the Isle of Wight and the sea is always less than 20 - 25mins away by car.
