Introduction

Squire Thatcher's Barn is a grade 2 listed building of great charm and historic interest. Probably built in around 1790 as part of a traditional square farm courtyard. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms downstairs and one bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. Access to the first floor is via a spiral staircase.

Pre-Arrival

  • Access to Squire Thatcher's Cottage is via a private road from the village of Newchurch. Buses from Newport or Sandown. The private road is a rural bridleway, not paved but fully accessible by car at all times.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

  • There is adequate and easy car parking by the cottage. It is well signed and gravelled. It is about 20 metres from the door to the cottage. For those visitors who need it a car can be driven to the courtyard door to drop those who would have trouble walking.

Main Entrance

  • The entrance for the cottage is the back door and is up 4 steps. For anybody for whom steps are difficult access is via the courtyard door which has no steps. The courtyard door is in a porch that has two ledges easily accessible by wheel chair users.

Public Areas - Hall, Stairs, Landing, Corridors etc

  • Most downstairs rooms are flat and on a single level and easily accessible but the kitchen, dining area and downstairs shower are one step below the level of the rest of the floor.

Public Areas - Sitting room, lounges, lobbies etc

  • The main sitting room has adequate and comfortable seating for 6. It has views to the south over a courtyard. To the north there are glorious views over farmland to Arreton and Mersley Downs. At one end is a dining area which is one step lower.

WCs

  • There are two bathrooms on the ground floor. One with a bath and toilet. The other is a wet room with a small step down.

Laundry

  • There is a utility room with a washing machine and dryer.

Bedrooms & Sleeping Areas

  • Three bedrooms as follows: ground floor 2 bedrooms (one double and one twin). On the first floor there is a bedroom with an en suite. The bedroom and bathroom are accessed via a spiral staircase.

Bathroom, Shower-room & WC

  • Upstairs bedroom en suite bathroom, with hand basin, toilet and bath. Two downstairs bedrooms with bathrooms across the corridor. One with bath the other with shower both with toilet and hand basin.

Self-Catering Kitchen

  • Well equipped kitchen with stove, fridge freezer. There is a step down from the hall to the kitchen.

Grounds and Gardens

  • A small lawned garden with fantastic views and outside table and chairs.

Additional Information

  • Evacuation procedures clearly and well marked. No smoking. The cottage is very quiet and rural.
