The cottage was designed by John Nash as a lodge for Westover Manor and is a Grade II listed building with wonderful grounds of 3.5 acres. This is a lovely walking area with footpaths very close to the cottage leading to Newbridge, Calbourne and to the downs above Brighstone, linking with the renowned Tennyson trail to Freshwater Bay.

Lavender Cottage is situated on a delightful farm in one of the loveliest parts of the Isle of Wight lying at the foot of Appuldurcombe Down and above the picturesque village of Godshill in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A pleasant ten-minute stroll through the beech copse and across the fields leads to the centre of Godshill. This village is renowned for its church and pretty thatched cottages. It has a variety of tea shops and restaurants as well as pleasant public houses. There is also immediate access from the farm courtyard to footpaths and bridleways leading to Appuldurcombe and along the Stenbury Trail to the coast at Ventnor. The sandy beaches of Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor are only a ten-minute drive away.
Above the arable fields of the farm lie sweeping open downlands where sheep graze and over which guests are welcome to walk along the marked trails. From the top of these downs there are wonderful panoramic views across the Isle of Wight towards the Hampshire and Dorset coastline. Buzzards and skylarks are often seen from these downs. In nearby woodland Red Squirrels and badgers can be seen as well as a variety of wild flowers. In the spring the bluebells carpet the woods in a blue haze. In the farm courtyard owls and woodpeckers are frequent visitors.
Lavender Cottage is one of three adjoining cottages that are south facing and overlook the attractive farm courtyard with its ancient Grade II listed barns and traditional farmhouse which dates back to the 17th century. From the rear of the cottage there are lovely views stretching across the open fields, to the church tower of Godshill, with St. George’s Downs beyond.
The cottage has been carefully converted from an old barn and has been renovated to a high standard. It is attractively furnished in a traditional style with fitted carpets and central heating. (Heating and electricity are provided free of charge). There is a large comfortable sitting room for relaxing, with a new flat screen television/Freeview/DVD/VCR, plus a pleasant dining area with an attractive floor to ceiling screen window. There are two bedrooms one double, and one twin room; a modern bathroom with a bath and overhead shower and also a downstairs cloakroom with a second W.C. and hand basin. Lavender Cottage has a lovely light, modern, well equipped fitted kitchen with a gas cooker and hob, microwave, fridge freezer and dishwasher. Guests have shared use with the other cottages of a laundry room with a washing machine and a tumble dryer. Travel cot/high chair available. Heating and electricity at no extra charge. WiFi internet available.
There is a sunny fenced patio at the front of the cottage overlooking the fountain. Garden furniture is also provided. Within a minutes walk of the cottage is an open lawned area suitable for ball games. Here visitors can relax with their children or enjoy a barbecue. Beautiful carpets of bluebells can be a joy to see, in nearby woodland, in late April and early May. Car parking spaces are available close to the cottage. Regular bus service and shop within 10 minutes walk.

Godshill is a pretty rural village with a number of thatched cottages and a historic church. A number of boutique shops are now found in the village selling Isle of Wight Glass and other local produce. A couple of public houses provide a good choice of place to eat and drink.

Website: allendale-ec.co.ukWalk or Cycle to Shanklin - This walk first follows the Stenbury Trail to Wroxall and then the cycle track to Shanklin. To reach the Stenbury Trail from Godshill head out of town along the main road towards Shanklin before turning right after 200 yards onto the trail. Continue up the trail to the Freemantle Gate (photo of the Freemantle Gate) which you pass thought and follow the path which bears left across the fields towards Appuldurcombe and Wroxall. There is a wide flat cycle way that runs from Wroxall to Shanklin. The track starts below the old railway bridge in the centre of Wroxall. If you are walking there is a footpath leading from alongside the bridge to the start of the track but if you are on a bike you must cross the bridge and follow the cycle path signs. Once you are on the track it is clearly signposted all the way to Shanklin. The track runs along the old railway line and the banks on either side are lined with lush vegetation.
Blackgang Chine - Blackgang Chine is a popular theme park with rides, games and a maze to keep the whole family entertained. Blackgang Chine is also thought to be the longest running theme park in the world and many generations of visitors remember it for the adventure and excitement it offers. Located just outside of Niton on the South of the Isle of Wight.
