Shanklin Beach is over a mile long in total so there is plenty of space even in the height of the summer season. The beach is busiest at the northern end where there are shops and entertainments. If you are looking for a little peace a quiet you can walk down to the southern end of Shanklin beach where you can also better enjoy the impressive and rugged coastline.
Pubs, cafes and restaurants are located along Shanklin Esplanade giving a good choice of places to enjoy lunch, a snack or just a refreshing drink. There are shops where you can buy beach games and towels.
If you are visiting with children there is crazy golf and children's amusements located at the Northern end of Shanklin Beach.
There is a lot of car parking available down by the beach but even this becomes full in the height of the season so it is worth arriving early for these spaces. Alternative parking is available in the centre of Shanklin if you don't mind the walk.
The Old Village at Shanklin can be reached by taking the paths up the cliff. You can avoid a steepish climb by taking the Shanklin Cliff Lift which costs £1.
Notices explain beach safety are found along the Esplanade at Shanklin Beach. It is important to read about the local conditions and how to stay safe. Facilities such as public toilets are available.
Getting There: Shanklin is on the East coast of the Isle of Wight between Sandown and Ventnor. Shanklin Esplanade is reached following signs from the centre of Shanklin. Alternatively, it is possible to park in Shanklin town and walk down to the coast.
If a whole day at the beach is a little too much for you then you can take the coastal path towards Ventnor (south) where, after a short distance, you reach the Grand View Tea Rooms which has a beautiful view over Shanklin Bay.

The coastal town of Shanklin on the East of the Isle of Wight enjoys a long sandy beach and historic town centre which makes it popular with holiday makers. Small parks and gardens can be found in and around the town in which to sit and enjoy some of the many sea views.
Shanklin is located on the coastal path and one can walk south to Bonchurch, Ventnor and St Lawrence and enjoy spectacular sceanary and views along the way. Alternatively you can take the coast road and take daytrips to the neigbouring beaches and bays.
Shanklin Beach - The long sandy beach at Shanklin is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Isle of Wight. The fine light sand is ideal for beach games and relaxing under the sun. Swimming and playing in the surf are popular activities at Shanklin Beach but there are also some organised events and activities for children and families. Punch and Judy can be found on Shanklin Beach in the summer months.
Shanklin Old Town - At the south end of Shanklin is Shanklin Old town with the thatched shops and public house. Here you will also find a range of traditional little shops selling local produce, old fashioned sweets and seaside gifts.
Shanklin Gardens - At the south end of Shanklin, between Shanklin Old Town and the beach is Shanklin Gardens which are a lovely peaceful place to take a short walk. You can walk from the centre of town up to a cliff top view (where there is a tea garden) and look down over Shanklin Beach. You are able to join the Isle of Wight Coastal Path from here.

Shanklin to Newport by Bike - If you are looking for a fairly flat bike ride with attractive rural scenery and with plenty of options to stop along the way and enjoy lunch at a pub or a picnic on a bench you might want to follow the cycle track from Shanklin to Newport (or as far along it as you wish to go). Shanklin Coastal Path - The coastal path from Shanklin is a beautiful part of the route which runs right around the Isle of Wight. To the South it is possible to walk to Luccombe where you can visit Devils Chimney and have tea at the tea shop, then on to Bonchurch with its 11th Century church and pretty village pond before getting to Ventnor where there is a beach and the Ventnor Botanical Gardens.
Shanklin to Ryde on the Train - You can travel to Ryde by the most punctual train in Britain. This day trip is a chance to visit the beach at Ryde or you may wish to incorporate it into a walk. One walk would be to take the train to Ryde and then follow the coastal path back towards Shanklin. You don"t have to go all the way back (although it is achievable in a day) but rather visit the small seaside town of Seaview which is only 45mins to an hour from Ryde before returning to Ryde to take the train back to Shanklin.
