Charming thatched cottage in an attractive rural setting a short drive from the coast, boasting small attractive coves and close proximity to one of Britain's most famous Victorian health resorts, Ventnor.

This traditional Grade II listed thatched cottage is situated close to the centre of the quaint rural village of Whitwell on the south east side of the island. Here, there is a great public house for meals and a lovely church. This is a fantastic walking area with a network of footpaths and trails within a few minutes walk of the cottage. These paths and bridleways extend across nearby downs and to the coast. The cottage is within a five minute drive of the coast where there are picture-postcard coves, botanical gardens and also the seaside resort of Ventnor with its beach that is ideal for paddling, swimming and fishing. It has an attractive esplanade with several places to eat and small boats come in with fresh fish which is sold on the quay. The larger, sandy beaches of Shanklin and Sandown are within a ten to fifteen minute drive.

The Barn Whitwell is semi-detached and dates back to the 17th century. It has been furnished and equipped with care to provide welcoming accommodation for six people in four bedrooms. A number of original features have been retained including beamed ceilings, a flagstone floor in the kitchen and lovely wooden floors with rugs upstairs. On the ground floor there is a tiled bathroom with a bath, hand shower, basin and WC; a fitted kitchen equipped with an electric cooker, electric hob, microwave, refrigerator with ice box, washing machine and a wonderful old pine dresser; a pleasant dining area with a pine table and chairs; a comfortable sitting room with a French door opening into the garden, with sofas and chairs, television with DVD player.

Stairs wind up from here to four charming bedrooms; two double rooms and two single rooms, plus a shower room with a built in shower, basin and W.C. Storage heating and electricity are provided without extra charge. Telephone for incoming calls plus emergency outgoing calls. A travel cot and high chair can be provided if required

The cottage has a delightful garden with a large lawn and a garden room where visitors can relax. Garden furniture is provided so that meals can be enjoyed in the sunshine. The garden is fenced and gated, however visitors with young children should be aware that there is a stream just beyond the fenced area. One-two cars can be parked to the side of the cottage. There is a public house within five minutes walk. general stores at the nearby village of Niton and a small supermarket and a variety of shops in Ventnor.

The area is lovely and we had a good holiday but the cottage upstairs is very small for 4 bedrooms and right next to a busy road on a section with no pavement so traffic is right outside the windows.

Clean, comfortable, warm. Good location for exploring the Island. One drawback is the closeness to the very busy road.

We have just returned back from our holiday at The Barn. We loved it! Its a lovely quaint little cottage. Although it has four bedrooms, I would imagine that if they were filled with adults the cottage would feel very full. But if they were used for children then it would be fine. Other reviewers have commented on the busy road and I would agree thRead moreat during the day it is very busy but much quieter at night and can honestly say that we didn't have any disturbed sleep because of it. Good location although on a fairly busy road. Very picturesque. Tasteful decor and comfortable beds and chairs. It was big enough for us (3) but would have been quite a squash for 6 especially in the kitchen. Also it had low ceilings and the shower room was tiny so not suitable for anyone over 6ft without stooping. Would go there again but it was aRead more bit pricey. Hide

This is a lovely cottage, well equipped and in a very nice village centrally located for exploring the island. The White Horse pub is a 5 minute walk and serves good food if you don't want to cook! There's a well stocked supermarket in the village of Niton.

Our first choice cottage was unavailable but we were very pleased that we then chose the Barn at Whitwell. It was delightfully warm and comfy, spotlessly clean with all rooms equipped well enough for our needs. The garden was a delight and overall we had a great time. Thank you.

The cottage is on a busy road which caused some difficulty. There should be central heating fitted as the electric heaters are a fire hazard. The shower is really really small and not suitable for a family. Other than that its a lovely cottage and we had a nice time!
