Property code: IC088

With breath-taking views from the property and garden, this property is the perfect choice for a romantic getaway for two.

This charming cottage is beautifully sited on the cliff top above Freshwater Bay in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are spectacular sea views of the bay and South coast from the cottage and garden, as well as fine views of Tennyson Down. Visitors can walk down for a swim in Freshwater Bay in less than five minutes. Walkers have immediate access across adjacent National Trust land to Tennyson Down and the coastal path to the Needles at the Western tip of the Island.

Moonfleet was built in the 1850s, originally as accommodation for the chief gunner stationed at the nearby Fort Redoubt. The cottage was completely rebuilt to modern standards in 2009 and is furnished and equipped with care to provide attractive and comfortable accommodation for two people. The accommodation is open-plan, but with partial walls which gives each room a feeling of separation. There is a fitted kitchen with an electric cooker and ceramic induction hob, microwave and refrigerator with freezer section. There is a pleasant sitting room and dining area with a sofa and a flat screen television with Freeview and a DVD player. A modern wood burning stove provides a relaxing atmosphere to both the bedroom and lounge.

The bedroom with a double bed, and hanging space has a door which opens into the garden. There is a cloakroom with a W.C and large basin, plus a separate wet room (one step down and narrowing to 2ft wide) with a shower providing constant hot water. The wood burner provides the main heating in the cottage in combination with electric radiators. Logs are provided. Heating and electricity are without extra charge. (Private use of washing machine/freezer in the nearby Fort Redoubt which is being converted into private accommodation by the owners of Moonfleet).

Moonfleet is surrounded by a private open plan garden of lawns which extend to the nearby cliff edge. Visitors are therefore asked to take the utmost care when in the garden. Guests can unload luggage in an area just above the garden and park a car in the Fort courtyard which is under a minute's walk away. General stores are within a ten-minute stroll, and a public house, tea room, cafe, and regular bus service are within a five minutes walk. A greater choice of shops are available in the nearby town of Freshwater which is a five-minute drive.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

Please note there is a refundable £100 security deposit for this property payable closer to the start of your holiday.

The location of this cottage is excellent for visitors who enjoy walking. Walking on Tennyson Down with my dog was a delight and the views were amazing. The cottage, though small, was adequate for our needs.

Moonfleet Cottage is just so lovely. Quiet & private location with amazing views from the garden. It is more than adequate for two people & we liked it so much that within two days of being there we booked it again for 2021.

The cottage is in a wonderful location, it is very private with stunning views. A marvellous base for all holiday activities. It is approached by 15steps going downhill ( with no handrail) so not recommended for very elderly or disabled visitors.

An idyllic spot on the cliff edge looking over Freshwater Bay. But if you want sleek modern holiday accommodation this is not for you. Lots of lovely walks nearby and a local shop but not much else. Great place to relax.

The Moonfleet cottage is beautiful and characterful in the most stunning location. Stepping out in the morning, taking a deep breath of fresh air on the cliff overlooking the sea is priceless. It's cosy inside, bed very comfy. Very small but everything there you need. Walks right from the doorstep, no traffic at all. Peace and quiet. A paradise forRead more dogs too. We had a lovely stay in this cosy cottage. It may have been a bit primitive (very narrow space for the shower, single-pane windows and no central heating), but that's part of its charm. The location is wonderful with spectacular views on the coast, perfect starting point for beautiful hikes and right next to a (privately owned) fort. We even got a Read moretour through the fort by the caretaker! Hide

I agree with all the nice things others have said about the property. The new bed mattress is very comfortable. Contrary to what was said in a recent review, I found the woodburning stove worked perfectly ok provided care is taken to shut the door properly. See above regarding small niggles. The best thing about the place is the view which is extraordinary, as is the peace and solitude. The people who look after it are fabulous. It is very remote, but that is the point of staying here, if peace is what you seek, this is the place to come to.
