Former residence of Charles Dickens and his family: an attractive period cottage offering accommodation for seven guests situated in the pretty seaside village of Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight’s south coast.

Hadfield Cottage is situated in the historic village of Bonchurch and is less than five minutes walk down to the sea. This coastal village enjoys a wonderful air of tranquillity with its traditional stone cottages, 11th century church and pretty village pond; home to ducks, moorhens and carp. A public house and restaurant are within a five minutes walk. This is a great walking area with a beautiful section of the island coastal path linking Bonchurch with Luccombe and Shanklin. It is a pleasant 20-minute stroll to the popular Victorian resort town of Ventnor. From here, the coastal path continues to Steephill Cove and the renowned Ventnor Botanical Gardens.

This traditional stone cottage nestles within a private walled garden in the grounds of Winterbourne, the Georgian house occupied by Charles Dickens and his family in 1849. It was here that the author wrote five chapters of his novel, David Copperfield. Hadfield Cottage is well appointed and provides comfortable accommodation in four bedrooms. It is furnished in a traditional style and is centrally heated. Upstairs, there is a charming double bedroom and single bedroom, plus a bathroom with a bath, hand shower, basin and WC.

On the ground floor there are another two lovely bedrooms - a double room with French doors which open onto a patio and garden, and an attractive twin bedroom. There is a tiled shower room with a walk in shower, basin and WC; a spacious open-plan living room with comfortable sofas and chairs, television with Freeview and DVD player, and windows overlooking the front garden and sunny rear patio garden to the historic Undermount, once the home of Queen Victoria's Lady in Waiting. A pleasant dining area is adjacent to the sitting room along with a split-level fitted kitchen equipped with an electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer and breakfast area beside the window. A washing machine/tumble dryer are also provided in separate utility area. (Please be aware that there are internal steps in the property). Heating and electricity are without extra charge. Telephone and WiFi internet are available, and a highchair and wooden cot can be provided.

Hadfleld Cottage has a large walled courtyard garden at the front of the cottage which is completely enclosed. This is a gravelled area with extensive flower beds and a patio area with garden furniture. There is also a sunny paved terrace at the rear of the cottage with a garden table and chairs which can be accessed via a Dutch door. Private space for parking two cars is available just outside of the walled courtyard in the drive of Winterbourne. There is a regular bus service within a ten-minute uphill walk. For Christmas, there are decorations and a Christmas tree provided.

Dogs fees are charged per dog at £20.00 for up to 7 nights, £40.00 for up to 14 nights and an additional £20.00 for every week or part week thereafter.

A delightful experience, it was so well equipped, every comfort considered, and the peaceful remote location was pleasantly surprising. The weather was very unkind and it was such a relief to come "home" after a wet day. Anne and Scott were so helpful and welcoming. Would be happy to revisit.
