Swanage is best known for its long sandy beach and majestic pier stretching out into the bay. The beach slopes gently into the water and this makes it ideal for swimming and bathing. Swanage attracts visitors at all times of the year thanks to its pleasant atmosphere, range of shops and the access it affords to the other riches of Purbeck. Swanage can make a convenient base from which to walk in the purbeck hills, stole along the purbeck coastal path or go sailing.
Corfe Castle is a historic icon of Purbeck and many people see the castle as the gateway to Purbeck. The small village of Corfe Castle remains traditional in many ways. The streets are lined with thatched cottages and a community equipped with village shop, village post office and 3 village pubs is still thriving in Corfe Castle. From Corfe Castle one can walk along the Purbeck hills to Swanage or, in the other direction to Lyme Regis. Corfe Castle is also on the Swanage steam railway line and frequent trains run back and forth.
Wareham is the principle town of Purbeck and has a lovely market town atmosphere. The river is a focal point and flanked by some restaurants and pubs. The centre of the town afford the opportunity to do some food shopping and the market gives a chance to buy some local products.
Studland offers one of the longest sandy beaches in the country and is a splendid place to relax and enjoy a Purbeck beach holiday. Miles of golden sand are not all that is on offer as behind the beach is a large area of nature reserve which is a home to a great number of bird species. Bird watchers can sit in specially made hides and observe bird life in the lakes, scrub and heathland. The ferry from Sandbanks offers access to the more urban areas of Poole and Bournemouth.
The Jurassic Coast is a UNESCO world heritage site and remains largely unspoiled. Numerous coves, bays and beaches line the coast and are great for exploring. A walk along the length of the Jurassic coast takes you to small villages offering pubs and teashops for refreshment. This walk is popular in the summer but still you can feel transported back to a prehistoric time by the dramatic landscape.
