Devils Chimney and Tea on the Isle of Wight

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

The Devil’s Chimney on the Isle of Wight is a little known and rather exciting hidden treasure located between Shanklin and Ventnor. The sinister name belies a very attractive and hidden part of the coast while being accessible to all those who don’t mind a few steps.

Devils Chimney Isle of Wight

Devils Chimney

What makes Devil’s Chimney even more special is the nearby Smugglers Haven Cafe which serves teas and enjoys a wonderful sea view.

To reach Devil’s Chimney by car you must take the coastal road between Shanklin and Ventnor. Not far from Ventnor you will see a sign for the Smugglers Haven cafe where there is a car park and an alternative car park, for those no wishing to take tea, is located nearby along the road.

From the cafe follow the path down the hill and in the direction of Ventnor. The path is narrow and there are low branches over the path. After 30 meters or so you will see the steps that lead down to Devils Chimney. Follow the steps through and out into the clearing on the other side. Be careful on the steps as they can be slippery when wet.

You can also reach Devil’s Chimney from the coastal path. Simply look out for the sign post pointing up to it from the section of the coastal path between Shanklin and Ventnor.

If you reach Devil’s Chimney from the bottom you will have to look carefully for the well disguised gap in the rock. Follow the wooden fencing near the entrance to help you.

Long Ledge Cafe

The Long Ledge Cafe at Bembridge is a friendly seaside cafe with panoramic sea views and a view of Culver Cliffs in the distance. The cafe serves a selection of snacks and light lunches as well as ice creams and coffee. A lunch of Bembridge Crab caught from the ledge is a favourite.

A walk along the coast from Bembridge can culminate in refreshment at the Long Ledge Cafe before walking inland back to Bembridge. You can find more information and instructions on ways of reaching the cafe from their facebook page –  www.facebook.com/forelandsbeachcafe

Crab Shed – Steephill Cove

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

A quick stop at the Crab Shed at Steephill Cove, Isle of Wight was a chance to try their delicious crab sandwiches and sit in the sun.

A full menu of crab and lobster dishes was available and included crab pasties and a half of lobster with salad and bread. It all looked delicious.

Steephill Cove is a special attraction and is largely undiscovered due to it not having a road going to it. You can reach it via the Coastal path south west from Ventnor or by walking down through the Ventnor Botanical Gardens.

Tuppenny cafe – Whitecliff Bay

Whitecliff Bay Isle of Wight

Whitecliff Bay

We stopped for a quick lunch at the Tuppenny Cafe at Whitecliff Bay yesterday. The egg sandwiches are excellent, with plenty of watercress and fresh salad, and could be enjoyed with a beautiful view of the bay and the white cliffs.

White cliff bay is not far from Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. The beach is ideal for swimming and a number of swimmers were enjoying the water while we were there. If you feel like a walk after lunch you can take the Coastal path up to Culver Cliffs and enjoy the view of Sandown Bay to the South or Bembridge to the North.
