Towns & Villages

Freshwater & Freshwater Bay - This small town is the principle settlement on the West of the Isle of Wight and has a number of small shops and three small supermarkets. Freshwater is at the centre of the sharp peninsular which juts out at the Western end of the Isle of Wight and is therefore surrounded by Totland Bay & Yarmouth to the North East, Alum Bay to the East and Brighstone southwards along the West coast.

Yarmouth - Location of the Isle of Wight ferry port on the North West of the Isle of Wight but a pretty and historic small seaside town in its own right. A selection of pubs and restaurants makes this a good destination in the evenings for something to eat and to enjoy the pleasant and friendly atmosphere. A summer festival of sailing and boating is held in Yarmouth called Gaffers.

Totland - This small settlement with small shop and public house neighbours Freshwater close to the North coast. The beach at Totland Bay (See below) is a beautiful spot to enjoy the sea.

Alum Bay - Most famous for the beach and the Needles Alum Bay is a popular holiday destination. The lesser visited Second World War Fort and missile testing centre (now owned by the National Trust) is a great vantage point to see the impressive Needles structure extending out into the sea. An admission charge is levied to visit the fort and museum but the missile testing site is open to the public free of charge.

Brook - A small village by the sea on the West of the Isle of Wight between Freshwater Bay and Brighstone beach.

Brighstone - This small and traditional village is a great holiday location with small thatched cottages and easy access to the beach at Brighstone. The heart of the village has two small shops and a public house. There is also a small restaurant.

Yafford - A small rural hamlet with a historic watermill and pleasant open countryside. Located near to the beach at Brighstone it is an idea quiet holiday location on the West of the Isle of Wight.

Shorwell - Small village surrounding a large church and located between Brighstone and Chale Green. There is good access to the beaches on the West side of the Isle of Wight as well as beaches on the South and South East Isle of Wight.

West Isle of Wight Beaches

The western coast of the Isle of Wight is almost a continuous beach made up of several long stretches of sand & shingle with a number of smaller coves. Here are some details of this coastline starting in the South.

Chale Bay - Several miles of soft shingle beach backed with impressive cliffs and dramatic landscape. Access to the beach is highly changeable due to rapid erosion in the area but most enter the beach about half way along at Whale Chine. Make sure you keep in mind the tide and possibility of erosion from the cliffs.

Shepherd Chine - A rather remote beach between Brighstone and Chale which is made of soft shingle and enjoys beautiful scenery.

Brighstone Beach - A soft mix of sand and shingle. Due to the easy access from a car park along the military road, and because of the nearby camp site, this is one of the more popular stretches of this area of the coast. A nearby pub, located at the campsite, provides some refreshments or there are a selection of shops in Brighstone. The beach extends for many miles in both directions and merges into the beaches on either side of it.

Brook - The beach at Brook is really and extension of the one found at Brighstone. Though there are patches of soft shingle for sitting on there is also more scope for adventure among the rocks which occour in shelves under the sea and are revealed at low tide. Low tide also reveals a rich variety of coastal life.

Freshwater Bay - One of the most popular beaches on the West of the Isle of Wight. The bay is popular with swimmers and sunbathers who like the water and the dramatic white cliffs which surround the bay. Local facilities, including a tea shop and local shop, add to the attractiveness of this location.

Alum Bay - A small bay with a view of The Needles. The beach is reached through The Needles Park (with amusements) which has a lift system (much like a ski lift) that conveys people up and down the cliff. It is also possible to reach the bay on foot if you prefer. The beach is know for the colourful seams of sand in the cliffs. Boat rides out to see The Needles run from a small jetty on the beach.

Totland Bay - A fantastic sandy beach with patches of shingle. Little known by visitors to the Island it is popular with locals. The water is good for swimming and the surrounding area is ideal for walking. Beach facilities include a couple of cafes and ice cream shops.
