Isle of Wight Cycle Route 9

10 Mile Moderate Isle of Wight Cycle Ride

Newport - Blackwater - Merstone - Rookley - Whitecroft - Newport

A central Isle of Wight cycle loop along cycle track and small roads near Newport and Merstone and Rookley.

The cycle route takes in a pretty stretch along the National Cycle Route 23 which follows a river teeming with wildlife. The rest of the route has a number of attractive villages and country lanes to explore.

The ride can be started in Newport (described below) or Rookley where there is parking and shops to buy food and supplies for the ride. Jump to Cycle Ride Detailed Directions »

Start Point

Newport is our starting point and there are many options for buying food and drink for this cycle ride. Newport also has a bike shop called Wight Mountain where they do quick repairs and have a large supply of bits and bobs for bikes.

1. Leave Newport (from near Marks & Spencer) heading south on Medina Ave which joins Shide Rd. On Shide Rd you approach a main road but 50 meters before it you take the cycle path on your right.

2. Follow the cycle track south and cross the road junction at Blackwater to continue along the cycle track on the other side. Follow this section signposted as NCR 23 till you reach Merstone and the disused railway platform (which has almost returned to nature).

3. Leave the cycle path and turn right onto Merstone Ln which you follow for around 1 mile till you meet the main road. Turn left onto the main road and then first right onto Chequers Inn Rd and follow till you reach the Chequers Inn and the road junction.

Off Road Option: Go straight over the junction and onto the track marked as a dead end road. At the end of the road turn left onto the bridal way and follow it over the fields to rejoin a track leading to a road. Turn right onto this road and right at the next junction to follow the road north till it joins a more major road. Turn right on this road till you reach the next junction at which the other route joins in. The rest of the route continues straight on (North).

3. Turn right at the junction and continue along the road into Rookley and the main Godshill to Newport Rd. Turn left onto this road and after 300 meters turn left onto Highwood Ln. Follow Highwood lane for about 1mile and turn right at the t-junction following the sign to Newport and Carisbrooke. (The Optional Route rejoins at this point)

4. Follow the road for less than 1 mile and bear off right along Sandy Ln. After 500 meters take the left turn onto Marvel Ln. Follow Marvel Ln and bear right onto Watergate Rd which you follow till the roundabout where you cross straight over onto St John's Rd and then right onto Cypress Rd. Follow Cypress Rd till it meets Medina Ave where you turn left and follow it back into the centre of Newport.

End Point

Back to Newport where there are plenty of places for refreshment. The bike shop opens till 5.30 Monday to Friday so if you need a repair you might still have time.
