The West of the Isle of Wight is known as an unspoilt and naturally attractive location with splendid coastal views and beautiful countryside. Visitors can enjoy wonderful walks and cycle routes as well as simply spending time in one of the many sites of outstanding beauty, such as the needles, the downs and the quite beaches. This area is also popular with surfers and water sport enthusiasts who come for the exciting surf. Family fun with the children can be enjoyed along one of the sandy or shingle beaches with the added attraction of discovery with fossils washed ashore from the fossilised forest. Walkers and cyclists can enjoy the Tennyson trail which runs into the centre of the island and can be followed to the castle at Carisbrooke. Organised attractions come in the form of a dinosaur museum, the adventure park of Black Gang Chine, Alum Bay Park and several historic buildings open to the public.
