Mead Cottage is attractively situated on a 12 acre farm on the edge of the small rural hamlet of Alverstone in “An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”. This is a wonderful position for outdoor pursuits, walking, cycling, fishing and golf. In the village there are lovely water meadows and fishing ponds with hides for bird and red squirrel watching. There are many footpaths leading up on to the downs and towards the coast.

This delightful cottage is very attractively situated in a peaceful rural hamlet in beautiful countryside but is only 1.5 miles from the lovely sandy beach of Shanklin, a small coastal town with a variety of restaurants and entertainments. The neighbouring seaside towns of Sandown and Ventnor are within an easy 10 minute drive. The cottage is in a good walking area with nearby footpaths leading to woodland and to the downs above Ventnor.

Footpaths can be followed across beautiful countryside directly from the cottage and these is easy access to a cycle path which links the seaside resort of Sandown with the pretty villages of Newchurch and Godshill and then extends to the market town of Newport with its lovely medieval castle of Carisbrooke. The cottage is within a 10 minute drive of the sandy beaches of Sandown and Shanklin. The accommodation is all on one level and the cottage has been furnished and equipped to a high standard. A nearby public house serves excellent food.

This charming cottage is nestled in the beautiful East Isle of Wight countryside, adjoining National Trust woodland, renowned for its carpets of bluebells; abundance of red squirrels and rabbits. The cottage commands wonderful views towards the sea and Culver Cliffs as well as of the Ventnor Down. Visitors have the freedom to enjoy over three acres of garden and private woodland. The sandy beach of Sandown is within a seven-minute drive.

Within 3 minutes of Shanklin's sandy beach - ideal for paddling and swimming. It is only a 2 minute walk from the lodge to the cliff path for beautiful views across Sandown Bay to the white cliff of Culver. Shanklin is a pleasant small resort on the south east coast of the Island with its own small theatre and a variety of interesting shops and restaurants. The Old Village of Shanklin has pretty thatched cottages, tea shops and public houses plus a beautiful chine, floodlit in the evening.
The Paper Barn occupies a delightful position on a lovely 12-acre farm, where horses are kept. The farm is surrounded by beautiful open countryside. It is a delightful walking area and visitors can follow footpaths over the Downs from close to the cottage.
The Paper Barn adjoins Squire Thatcher’s Barn and sits at the edge of a lovely open grassy courtyard which is often adorned by ducks. Nearby is the farmhouse and a small number of stables where horses are kept. The cottage has been sensitively converted from an 18th century Grade II Listed stone barn. It has been furnished and equipped with care and has attractive open views at the rear, across fields to the Downs. The accommodation is all on the ground floor and follows an open plan design, which gives the feeling of space. There is a light and pleasant sitting room with comfortable sofas, television, DVD and a hi-fi system. The floor in this area is attractively furnished with rugs over the original flagstones. There is a pleasant dining area and modern fitted kitchen with electric cooker and hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer and washer/dryer. The cottage has two attractive bedrooms - one double and one twin room plus a modern bathroom with a bath and overhead shower. Travel cot/highchair can be provided. Electric heaters keep the cottage warm in colder weather. Heating and electricity are provided free of charge. The cottage has a wireless broadband internet (WiFi) connection but please be aware that that this will not be available until 17th March 2014.
There is a lovely private terrace at the rear of Paper Barn with wonderful open views across the lawn and fields towards the downs. Garden furniture and a barbecue are provided. The larger lawned garden has a beautiful cherry tree and is a delightful place to relax. The garden is fenced and gated whilst not being formerly divided from the garden of a small adjacent cottage, The Paper Barn is only a 10-minute walk from the lovely rural village of Newchurch, which has a good public house for meals. The sandy beaches of Sandown and Shanklin are a 10 minute drive away. The market town of Newport is within a 15 minute drive. Parking space for one car is adjacent to the garden. An additional car can be accommodated by prior agreement. Access to the cottage is along a gravel lane which is bumpy in places and not suitable for low slung vehicles. Rural bus service ¼ mile.
Paper Barn has ground floor accommodation and is a non smoking cottage. WiFi Internet is provided at a charge of £12.00 at Paper Barn. Paper Barn is available for weekly self catering holiday bookings from Saturday to Saturday. The normal arrival time at this holiday cottage is 15:00 and the normal departure time is 10:00. Short break weekend and midweek self catering holidays are available from 18th February 2017 to 30th March 2017 and 28th October 2017 to 17th December 2017.

Newchurch is a quiet rural village with a beautiful church, excellent local public house and surrounded by beautiful countryside ideal for walking and cycling. Newchurch is a short distance from the East coast where there are sandy beaches. Shanklin and Sandown can be reached via the cycle path or can be reached by car in just a few minutes.

You can easily cycle to the beach at Sandown or head inland towards Newport where there are routes peeling off to Godshill, Wroxall, Cowes and most of the rest of the Isle of Wight. Local nature reserve - Alverstone Mead and the SSSI of Alverstone Marshes are within a short walk of Borthwood. Join the cycle track at Alverstone and head towards Sandown. You will cross the reserve along the way.

Paper Barn is a grade 2 listed building of great charm and historic interest. Probably built in around 1700 (but possibly considerably earlier as part of the Quarr Abbey pre reformation farm holdings on the Isle of Wight) as part of a traditional square farm courtyard. It has two bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs.
Access to Paper Barn is via a private road from the village of Newchurch. Buses from Newport or Sandown. The road from Newchurch is a rural bridal way not paved but fully accessible by car at all times.
Arrival & Car Parking Facilities
There is adequate and easy car parking by the cottage. It is well signed and gravelled. It is about 20 metres from the door to the cottage. For those visitors who need it a car can be driven to the front door to drop those who would have trouble walking.
The main entrance for the cottage is the back door and is up 1 step. For anybody for whom steps are difficult access is via the front door which has no steps.

All downstairs rooms are flat and on a single level and easily accessible.

The main sitting room has adequate and comfortable seating for 4. It has views to the south over a farmyard. To the north there are glorious views over farmland to Arreton Down. At one end is a dining/ kitchen area on the same level.
There is a bathroom on the ground floor with a wash basin and toilet.
