The North of the Isle of Wight is a wonderfully varied location with beautiful coastal areas and historic sites. The main towns in the North are Yarmouth in the North West, Gurnard and Cowes in the centre of the Northern coastline, and Ryde in the North East. There is a sandy beach at Ryde, a shingle and sand beach at Gurnard and a long shingle beach at Cowes.
The principle town here is Cowes where a vibrant sailing scene exists and culminates in the yearly Cowes Week festival. Yarmouth also enjoys a strong connection with the sea and has its own festival of Gaffers which attracts a large number of brightly decorated boats.
The inland areas of the North side of the Isle of Wight are known for their beautiful countryside. The estuary at Wootton is an important area for birds and views across the estuary are often enhanced by a number of bird species.
