Two Mead Cottage is one of a pair of cottages which stand in the attractive rural hamlet of Alverstone, and is less than three miles from the sandy beaches of Sandown on the east coast of the Island. The long stretch of sand at Yaverland beach is also only a ten-minute drive away. The cottage is located on a 12 acre farm which is home to horses and free range chickens. The farm is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and has a large pond which attracts ducks, moorhens and the occasional heron. This is a wonderful walking area with footpaths leading up on to the downs and towards the coast. There are also water meadows in the village with hides for bird and red squirrel watching. The village of Newchurch is within a 25-minute walk and here, there is a pleasant public house for meals. A great cycle track also runs through Alverstone, giving access to large parts of the island by following the old railway tracks which were used early in the 20th century.

Mead Cottage has been converted from a barn and provides comfortable accommodation for four people in two bedrooms. The cottage has underfloor heating beneath a tiled floor, with panel heaters upstairs. There is a well-equipped fitted kitchen with an electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher and refrigerator with freezer section. A washing machine and tumble dryer are also provided in the cottage, and there is access to a freezer in an outbuilding beside the cottages. There is a spacious open-plan sitting room which extends across the width of the cottage and is a bright room with patio doors opening into the pretty courtyard garden. The sitting room is furnished with a sumptuous sofa and chairs, plus Smart TV. A wood burning stove provides a central focus for the room in colder weather. There is a pleasant dining area beside the window. A wet room is also on the ground floor with a shower, basin and WC. Upstairs, there are two attractive bedrooms which enjoy rural views; one spacious double room and a compact twin bedroom. There is a bathroom with a bath, overhead shower, basin and WC. A travel cot and high chair are available.

The cottage has a private courtyard-style garden which is fenced and gated ,and from which there is an attractive view over paddocks to the pond. Garden furniture and a barbecue are provided so that meals can be enjoyed outside. Parking is to the rear of the cottage and there is space to store bicycles. The Alverstone Marshes (Triple SSI - Site of Scientific Interest) with abundant wildlife adjoins the farm. Nearby places to visit include Robin Hill Adventure Park, Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, The Garlic Farm and Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

A wonderful cottage in a peaceful location but well positioned for accessing anywhere in the Island. Ideal if you love wildlife and walking - we saw red squirrels in the adjacent nature reserve every day. Odette and Anita are very helpful and friendly hosts, and the lemon drizzle cake and eggs from the chickens were most welcome.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay along with our two dogs at 2 Mead Cottages. The owners are very friendly, welcoming, and thoughtful but not intrusive. Everything you could wish for is provided and the yummy lemon drizzle cake, fresh eggs, milk, and flowers were much appreciated. We would recommend this venue and hope to revisit it in the future.
