The access to Elm Cottage for visitors on arrival and departure (though not the main entrance for use during their stay) is through the gate from the drive to the adjoining house, 2 Elm Cottage.
The drive is a gravel slope leading to a five-barred gate, with a gravel and stone-flagged path beyond. There are 3 shallow steps, which can be avoided by going round the bushes to the left, on the grass. The path leads round the corner of the adjoining house to the back door of Elm Cottage, about 23 metres altogether.
The driveway width at its narrowest is 3.90 metres, but this widens out towards the road. From the back door, there is a step of 17cm up into the entrance passage (105 cm wide), and another step down of 17cm from the passage to the living area. The kitchen worktops, sink and hob are 92 cm high. In the bedrooms, the height of the master bed is 59 cm, the single beds in the triangle room 60 cm, and the bunk beds 44cm and 127 cm. The bath height is 54 cm and the toilet seats upstairs and down are 41 cm.
The principal entrance to Elm Cottage from Roud Road, to be used during visitors stay, has 5 steps measuring 15cm. followed by a sloping concrete path of about 30 metres, leading to gravel up to the front door. Unfortunately, because of the slope and the steps involved in access, the house is not suitable for wheelchairs or people with walking difficulties. The nearest bus stops for Newport, Ryde and Ventnor are at the Griffin Inn in Godshill, about 1.5 miles, with a large free car park opposite.
Ventnor is 4 miles away and Newport 6 miles, but there are village shops within about 2 miles at Godshill, Chale Green and Rookley.
