casktavernersSpecialising in local game, fish and the more traditional dishes the Cask & Taverners in Godshill offers something deliciously different. A large board shows what is in season around the year and the specials allow you to eat the freshest local foods.

A variety of tempting dishes waft past to other tables as you make your difficult choices from the menu but a good selection of wines, ales and ciders help lubricate the brain in preparation.

map_freshwaterAn amazing pub which you will recommend to everyone

highdown inn FreshwaterA delightful place to have lunch or dinner on the West side of the Isle of Wight and only a small detour when walking along the Tennyson Downs or around Freshwater and Alum Bay. The Highdown still draws a crowd due to an excellent reputation for it's food and because it combines an authentically friendly atmosphere and charming traditional public house feel. The menu of specials is chalked up on the wall and offers inovative and mouth watering dishes which take full advantage of local produce and fish.

The New Inn - Shalfleet

Shalfleet Isle of Wight

Traditional pub with good seafood.

the New Inn Shalfleet Isle of WightThis pub is one of the oldest on the Isle of Wight and dates back to 1743. The interior remains traditional and the open fire and exposed beams add to the warm atmosphere. Dispite a fairly isolated location you will usually find it bustling with punters who are pondering the choices on the specials board.

The food is well prepared and includes has a large selection of fish and seafood as well as traditional favourites. The whole crab is excellent (although tricky for the uninitiated) and the fillet of salmon with puy lentils & minted yoghurt dressing would satisfy the highest standards.  Ingredients always seem to be soured locally wherever possible and the dishes on the specials board often features the names of farmers & producers.

The New Inn is easy to find at Shalfleet between Yarmouth and Newport. If you have a chance I recommend a visit across the road to have a look at the fine old church.

A light lunch consists of a large choice freshly made salads and panninis, baguettes and sandwiches. The evening menu is more substantial with choices like Chicken and Mushroom Crêpe, Asparagus Fettuccine Stir Fry With Peanut Sauce, Beef Stroganoff and Oven Baked Sea Bream.

Yarmouth Isle of Wight

Without a doubt Salty's is one of the most unusual restaurants on the Isle of Wight but also one of the best.

The menu is dominated with locally caught fish and seafood which attracts a diverse crowd of both young and old who share an appreciation of good food and excellent hospitality.

Booking ahead to reserve a table is recommended and your hostess will oblige by ruling off a section of one of the long tables downstairs with chalk and writing your name across it. Your meal is therefore enjoyed in a communal spirit and the whole restaurant gathers together for what looks like a traditional feast. This melting pot of locals and visitors to the Island from all walks of life guareentees interesting interactions and few visitors to the Island will leave without a long list of recommendations for things to see.

Seaview, Isle of Wight

Fine dining in the seaside town of Seaview.

The Seaview Hotel is well known for its food and high level of service. Under the guidance of head chef Graham Walker the restaurant has returned to earn that reputation after a spell in the doldrums.

I found the food to be playful and interesting to look at with plenty of wow factor. The taste didn't disappoint either and even the humble parsnip was conjured into a treat with rich and varied flavours. You can imagine the menu planning sessions in this restaurant being an impassioned affair as they dream up new ways to wow the diners.
