Cowes, Isle of Wight is best known for the spectacular and popular yacht race and maritime event which occurs once a year. However, Cowes is gaining a reputation as a destination of merit at other times of the year.
The centre of town has a Cornish seaside town feel with cafes and restaurants serving traditional favourites. There are also a wealth of maritime themed shops which sell fashionable coastal fashion through to advanced marine technology.
The coastal stretch to the West of the town is a shingle beach which has a promenade running alongside. This takes you out to a selection of restaurants and hotels and eventually into the adjoining town of Gurnard. Here you will find beachside cafes and stretches suitable for swimming. As part of the coastal path this is the area to spot seabirds which seem to flock around this coast.
To the East Cowes if joined to the town by a small chain linked ferry which provides a free service to foot passengers. From the ferry there is a walk uphill to Osborne House which was the former holiday home of Queen Victoria and a marvellous building now open to the public.

This wonderful detached property stands in a superb position beside the sea, close to the centre of Cowes. It enjoys panoramic sea views from almost every room. The glass walls, balconies and large open terraces of the house enable visitors to relax, enjoy meals and awake to the sight of the sea. A large number of yachts sail in this part of the Solent and are lovely to watch as are the ocean liners which pass by in the distance looking particularly wonderful when illuminated at night. The Glass House is literally a stones throw from the sea and the centre of the small town of Cowes is within a 5 minute walk.

Historic Buildings on the Isle of Wight
|
|
The Isle of Wight has a rich modern history and one of the highlights is Osborne House. The house was the holiday residence of Queen Victoria and was acquired after her marrige to Albert. The house is now open to the public and exhibits a large number of interesting artifacts with particular relevance to the house, the Victorian reign and Queen Victoria's family life.
The gardens of the house allow for a pleasent walk down to the Swiss Cottage which was once the home of Queen Victoria's children in their younger years. This is also reachable for the less able walkers via a minibus service which takes you the half mile distance. Coffee shops and a small restaurant can be found around the grounds and offer everything from tea to a 3 course lunch.
