Priestly Wing - Alum Bay House
Sleeps 6 + 1 in 3 bedrooms; Children welcome; Pets by agreement; Smoking not permitted
Priestley Wing is nestled in beautiful West Wight countryside and most of the main rooms enjoy spectacular views across fields to the sea. It is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and much of this part of the coastline is cared for by the National Trust. It is a wonderful walking area with footpaths leading directly from Priestley Wing across fields to the nearby Tennyson Down and The Needles on the western tip of the Island; to Tennyson Monument and the coastal path to Freshwater Bay and also to the coastal path leading to the bays of Totland, Colwell and Alum Bay. Visitors can walk to the High Down Inn and to Alum Bay - ¾ mile. The village of Totland is a mile away and within two miles is the larger town of Freshwater which has a variety of shops, a good public house for meals and a leisure club with indoor swimming pool. The attractive town of Yarmouth, with ferries to Lyminton, is a 15 minute drive away.
Priestley forms the ground floor wing of Alum Bay House, a property which dates back to the 1600’s. Priestley has its own private entrances at the front and rear of the property. It has recently been renovated to a very high standard and has been sensitively furnished and equipped in an attractive country house style. It has a number of delightful paintings and the use of rugs over cream fitted carpets, which extend throughout most of the property, is very effective. Priestley Wing provides very comfortable accommodation for six people in 3 bedrooms - one twin room and two lovely double rooms with sea views. One of the double rooms has French doors which give direct access outside. There is a bathroom with a bath, basin and W.C.; a shower room with a built in shower, basin and W.C.; an open plan sitting room furnished with comfortable sofas, a colour television with DVD player and a lovely dining area where meals can be enjoyed in comfort whilst enjoying the views. There is a particularly attractive kitchen with fitted units and a granite style top. It is equipped with an electric cooker and hob, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator with small freezer section and washing machine. There is also a very pleasant breakfast area. All the accommodation is on one level with two small internal steps and there are no outside steps if Priestley Wing is accessed via the small courtyard at the rear. Storage heaters, with convectors combined, keep the property warm. A folding bed, cot/high chair can be provided if required.
There are wonderful gardens at the rear of the house and visitors have shared use of ‘the croquet lawn’. This is a large garden where visitors can relax and enjoy meals outside. Garden furniture, an umbrella and barbecue are provided. There are marvellous panoramic views from this garden across the surrounding fields to the downs, to Tennyson monument, and to the western reaches of the Solent with the Hampshire coastline in the distance. Three cars can be parked at the side of the property. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities in the surrounding area including sandy beaches, sailing, boating, horse riding and golf. Regular bus service within 5 minutes walk. Shop, public house, telephone and beaches within 1 mile.
